MYOlabs Leather Experience in Florence

I’m always excited when I’m invited to take part in a creative workshop and so when Leonardo Leather and Gold asked me if I’d like to take part in one of their new Make Your Own / MYO labs leather experiences, I jumped at the opportunity!

The Leonardo Leather & Gold store is located in the heart of Florence in a beautiful 16th-century building in the historic district known for its artisans and especially those that work with leather.

Leonardo’s Leather Works began in April 1973, thanks to the experience and creative talents of Paolo and Miù Fortini, who both wished to bond tradition with originality in the world of leather crafting. Quality production and all-around excellent service was their trademark then, and still is today, 40 years on – combining top craftsmanship together with quality and style is typical of what makes Made in Italy so sought after.

“We are Florentines, custodians of traditional craftsmanship and know-how that is handed down from generation to generation here in Tuscany, techniques that also incorporate the innovation of modern methods in how we go about processing our leather and precious metals.
We are champions and supporters of Made in Florence as an integral part of Made in Italy, offering only products of beautifully handcrafted excellence. Precious unique objects are obtained from the best Florentine leather in full respect of the Italian and Tuscan tradition of leather processing.”

Leonardo Leather & Gold

Every day in Florence, masterpieces of craftsmanship are made in the Florentine laboratories and shops, using a truly unique knowledge and skills handed down from father to son in the shops of the historic centre, respecting the traditional Florentine techniques of leather processing.

Leonardo Leather are the proud guardians of this age-old knowledge, which they love to share with those who wish to have a truly unique experience and for this reason, they created a real “Leather Crafting Experience”, a leather workshop that will allow you to get a taste of the ancient craft of leather goods with your own hands, observing the masters’ work, while also enabling you to experiment and create a precious object with professional guidance to take home.

The leather workshop is held in the underground cellars of the store which has been restored to create an authentic space to create your own leather masterpiece. You can choose from a belt, passport holder or coin purse. I chose the passport holder and really enjoyed the whole process; from choosing my leather to tracing and cutting the pattern piece, adding the rivets to the final stage of embossing my initials in gold foil!

I truly felt like a Florentine craftsman and it was really fantastic to take home something that I had created together with my Leonardo Leather certificate of participation and all packaged so beautifully,

This is such a fun experience to do with friends and or family when visiting Florence! The Leonardo Leather & Gold family are so welcoming and generous with their time and knowledge. If you would like to participate in one of their workshops, please check out the various workshop options here.
